Ragnar’s Host – A 500 Gold Norse Darklands Host

So after lovingly assembling my Norse Faction, which can be read about in my previous blog post, I finally got around to painting through my first Darklands host which I will be showing off in this very post. I also had the pleasure of painting another Darklands host up for Portal Wargaming’s very own TheDreamer……..more on this can be read about in my upcoming guest post on the Dispatches From The Portal in the near future! I really enjoyed painting these models, they are such AMAZING sculpts! Portal Wargaming Centre has them set up as a demo force  on the table seen in the following pictures:

I took inspiration for the colour of my Trolls from the Darklands Cover artwork:

This is my Tale of 6 Darklands Gamers Force Complete for the 500 Gold Challange but I have received in the post some additions from the previous Kickstarter project, these will give me options as I grow my force up to 1000 Gold and above:

The Northmen Cometh!

As many of you may know I love to play lots of Wargames and have played many genres but my favourites are Fantasy Settings and Alternate History. This year seems to have a theme in the games that I am buying, building, painting and playing with and that theme is Alternate History.

This year has seen me return to a game that I had lost the love for towards the end of its last edition (Malifaux), Received my Wild West Exodus Kickstarter stuff (which I intend to be collecting a new force for in the near future) and of course the reason that I am writing this……

So Darklands???? I hear you cry…..this is probably the best game you’ve never heard of!!!! A bold Statement I know but I believe this, and as such I will say it again………PROBABLY THE BEST GAME YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF!!!

So what is it and why am I so in love with it????

Darklands is a 30mm Dark Ages Fantasy Game, an Alternate History game if you like where the forces of the Dark Ages march forth unto battle accompanied by the creatures of myth and legends….everything from beastmen to dragons!!! The miniatures are huge so I am now using the term Bigatures! Speaking of the Bigatures, these are things of absolute beauty and cast in resin with the highest quality control…I am not just saying this, these models have been sculpted by some of the worlds best freelance sculptors!!!

So the Northmen Cometh!!!

From the bleak lands of the painted to the soft coasts of the south, from the icy shores of Thule to the windswept beaches of Frankia, the Norsemenn are reviled in the darklands as murderers of women and children, pillagers and slavers without mercy, wild and savage killers that destroy almost everything they touch and take the rest for themselves. The fury of the northmen sweeps all before them, and yet the Norse, the Skilfing kingdom in particular, are not so barbaric – nor so different from other humans – as many would choose to believe. To live upon the cold edges of the world where the soil is poor, with the incalculable threat of gods and jötnar in the mountains around them, who is to say other men would not take to the seas to plunder and raid to feed their children? To the Norse, the weak are nothing, for their realm has taught them that only the strong and the ruthless survive, and their victims that see clearly understand that one day the strawhairs will not merely raid their coasts; they will surely take them and the lands beyond. Led by the Seven foot tall and near as broad, Eirik Longaxe. He is almost as legendary as the longship he is steersman of, Hrafnen. A mighty Skei of sixty oars, Hrafnen bears the raven’s head on its prow, a powerful symbol of Odin’s favour and a reassuring presence to Hrafnen’s crew – but a terror to the villages and towns that the mere sight of Hrafnen brings. Eirik himself believes that the wrath of Odin travels with him upon his raids, a belief that holds greater the further he sails and the more treasure he plunders, for he and his crew have always returned home, bruised and battered maybe, but always with gold and silver from the monasteries and halls and villages of the weaker peoples to the west. Indeed, such is his reputation in the shieldwall and on the seas that many other longships and steersmen are drawn to his banner, greedy to take a slice of the pickings from his raids and his battles, for all know that Eirik understands the sailing of all Midgard and where to strike for plunder like no other Norseman.

I have received my 499 gold Norse Army. The army consists of Eiric Longaxe – Steersman of Hrafnen, Brynhild Gunnblindi – Gyhtja of Hrafnen and 5 Norse Trolls.

The models all arrived well packaged inside a cardboard postal box with ample bubble wrap to keep my goodies safe and sound while in transit. Once I had got all my items out for the photograph above it was apprent the they were all well packaged in blister packs for the most part. I have to say that the Laser Cut MDF tokens set is lovely!!!

The models are cast in resin to a VERY high standard of quality control as you can see from the pictures below of the unpackaged miniatures:

Here you can see my assembled Eiric Longaxe,  he is a 7ft warrior and as you can see the model is bigger than a Games Workshop Space Marine!! The rest of my models are shown below assembled and ready for paint. I have washed these models in soapy water prior to assembly!  (Space Marine used as the Measuring Stick so to speak):

Warhammer 40,000 7th Edition Teaser?

I really enjoy 6th edition and it would appear that things are about to get a whole lot more interesting in the world of Warhammer 40,000.

The below has hit the interwebs. Whilst vaguer than normal it coincides with news that rules and starter sets have been pulled from the Games Workshop website and stores. So it could mean that Warhammer 40,000 7th edition is about to hit.

There’s been plenty of rumours about the boxset contents. Blood Angels and Orks seemed to have been one that stuck around, but as always we’ll wait and see rather than guess. And we won’t have to wait for long. Time to reallocate the monthly budget methinks…

SWORDS FOR HIRE – A Malifaux Viktorias Crew

So as you may have realised I have got the Malifaux bug! I have been playing with my old Lady Justice Crew while I have been painting my pledge for the #PortalMalifauxResurrection.

I have decided to break away from my beloved Guild and have gone Outcasts picking the gorgeous Viktorias Crew box called Hired Swords. This boxed set consists of 3 Ronin, Taelor, Student of Conflict, Viktoria of Ashes and Viktoria of Blood. The models are in plastic and I found, with my sausage fingers, that they were VERY fiddley! However I will say that the process was well worth it when you see them all assembled in front of you! These are some sexy women don’t you know!

Viktoria of Ashes & Viktoria of Blood

As you will see from my photos I have scratch built the bases for these models and the theme of my force is Sucker Punch so I set about building them using Cog-O-Two mdf cogs, cork and styrene I frame for girders.

Student of Conflict

These Ronin have been entered into this month’s #MFXTOP Competition over on Twitter and I’m excited to see how I do against the great talent that enters tge competition every month!

Finally I added to the boxed set with Vanessa,  Treasure Hunter, who is the younger sister of the Viktorias!

Hope you like my new crew for Malifaux!

Salute 2014

So me, my business partner and a couple of the guys from Portal Wargaming Centre

made the trip to the ExCel centre in London for the 2014 Salute Wargames Show.

As we approached the ExCel Centre excitment grew for the day ahead, we had no real plan but knew we’d be eyeing up things from the guys at West Wind Productions as well as a few other manufacturers. We entered the event on traders badges thanks to Wendy and Andy Cooper from West Wind and had a brief walk around as the traders were setting up and caught a glimpse of the awesome demo game from our friends over at Leicester Phat Cats, Ant & Coops. Then after a brief chat with Tim Ryder at the West Wind stand we met our friend who had queued for a ticket and set about exploring!

We saw plenty of cool tables but I couldn’t get a picture of all so here is a coupl that caught my eye:

Then the day was dominated by one  manufacturer – Mierce Miniatures and so Salute Day 2014 Shall be known by the guys from Portal as DARKLANDS DAY!!

We approached the stand and drooled over the sheer scale of the miniatures at hand (pun intended, see pics)

These huge figures are Premium Quality Resin Miniatures, some standing as tall as 200mm high!! They are cast my master craftsmen at Mierce’s own facility and are sculpted by an array of awesome tallent!

We had a chance to watch a demo game and talk to the Managing Director,  as well as the helpful and enthusiastic staff !! We broke away several times but after a few paces found ourselves drooling over the painted miniatures in the cabinets and those on display in bare resin…..and so DARKLANDS day was born!

I cannot praise these models and the gameplay more highly..it is a must for all my fellow #WARMONGERS to check out, oh and did I tell you it is on kickstarter for the next week!?

Go check it out guys and gals, you won’t be disappointed!!

A Time For Justice – My First Game of Malifaux 2e

Justice in Malifaux isn’t always served but today Lady Justice has arrived in Firecreek on a mission to serve justice on Perdita Ortega.

Firecreek was one of the first pioneer towns to be created to the East of Malifaux, in the Badlands, by the Portal Company with the permission of the Guild. Expanding on the existing buildings located to the South of the new town. This is the location of the showdown!

After set up we were so excited to get started I forgot to take some pics so after a few moves I took this photo…

The Ortegas went first with the Strategy being Squatters Rights. Nino went first from his spotter location and killed a Death Marshall, another Death Marshall approached the building and placed a scheme marker. The Ortegas moved up with companion putting Perdita on a Squat Marker.

The turns went on and more Scheme Markers were placed by me and more Squat Markers were turned to the side of justice.

The final score was 9-7 for Lady Justice.

I loved the game, its great and I can’t recommend it enough!

Scorpius GLC out for now!
